Munchies Review

198 Prospect road, Prospect SA 5082

Prospect road has become a melting pot of cultures and flavours within a significantly short amount of time.

We can all remember the time that the store 50sixone was introduced to Adelaide and its introduction to Prospect road took the popolus by storm.

How? They took something well-known and elevated it to something new and different.

Now imagine that level of creativity in flavours putting it in a spring roll.

That is exactly what Munchies spring roll house has set out to do.

Stepping onto the scene about a month ago, Munchies set out to bring classic American cuisine to the people of Adelaide, along with a speciality of sweet and savoury spring rolls that can make your mouth water by reading them.

Walking into the shop, the first thing that will catch your eye is definitely the upholstery. The reuse of milk crates gives the eatery a nice, rustic feel where the food is more important than your surroundings, and so it should be. The creativity in their lights coincide with their clever marketing as well, with little promotions such as "springies" and "vegans welcome".

If I was to criticise anything, it would be that the lights were somewhat dim come sunset.

However, the most important thing at any eatery is the food, of course, and it was very difficult to fault.

My brother came with me in order to get a clear idea of the flavours on the menu, as we are essentially polar opposites with food.

I opted for the Mr. Pep burger, a chicken burger with toppings that you would find on a pizza, like pepperoni and marinara sauce. Accompanying my burger was a side of regular chips and an iced tea. My brother opted for a serving of Jalapeno Poppers and a single serving of their Buffalo Nugg loaded fries.

And of course, we cannot go to a spring roll house and not order spring rolls. We chose the mac n' cheese & bacon spring rolls and The Jefrey spring rolls (owner's recommendation).

I would argue and say that that Mr. Pep burger is up there with one of the best burgers I have had. The cheese was melted perfectly, it was not overloaded with sauce, chicken was well-seasoned and above all, the burger paid attention to an aspect that I believe is overlooked by other burger joints, and that is uniformity. The Mr. Pep was amazing because the first bite was as good as the first, I did not get any inconsistent flavours in that burger, they all worked together in perfect harmony.

The buffalo and ranch sauce on the nuggets and fries contained the perfect mix of sweet n' spicy that someone who is not a big fan of spice (me) could eat those and enjoy them without worrying about their mouth being on fire.

With a price ranging from $12-$15 for the savoury springies, anyone who believes that paying that much money for 3 spring rolls will be happy to know that the spring rolls are worth that money, both in flavour and portion size. The mac n' cheese & bacon spring rolls tasted nice with the accompanied cheese sauce, which helped the filling of the spring roll, as it tasted a little bland. However, the Jefrey provided an exciting new taste to the traditional spring roll because of the flavourful vegetable medley filling, accompanied by sweet n sour sauce.

Our tray was wiped clean and our night was finished with a serving of kinder surprise spring rolls.

Overall, the experience at Munchies was great. The ambience of the store is warm and inviting as the sun is out, and even though they do have creative upholstery for dine-ins, I would say the place presents itself as more of a takeaway eatery.

I would highly recommend Munchies because it is a place I will definitely see myself revisiting and telling my friends about. Those chicken parmi and pepperoni pizza springies are calling my name and let's not even get started on their desserts. Will definitely be trying their homemade donuts and their self-promoted Mi Goreng fries for a taste of something different.

'Till next time!
