13/15 Mount Barker Rd, Hanhndorf SA 5245
Advertised as a Cellar Door and Charcoal Grill, The King’s Table specializes in charcoal grilling of various meats and vegetables, skewering them on an apparatus the owner would call a ‘sword’ to make you feel like you are dining in luxury like royalty.
Menu
Garnering a somewhat simple menu, it saved my family and I when we visited the eatery the hassle of not knowing what to choose. My parents had previously visited the restaurant and got to talking with the owner, who opened The King’s Table after years of focusing on Asian cuisine.
Their slogan Feast like a King reigns supreme, as the portion sizes and pairings of traditional charcoal with foreign accompaniment provide almost a new taste for the customer. As a first time customer, the prices are a little steep but when in Hahndorf, it’s good to treat yourself.
Of course being a cellar door, the restaurant makes and stores their own wine, sourcing a variety of flavours. My mother and I shared a glass of the mulled wine. Served warm, it went down very nicely with the food that we ordered.
Food
The restaurant’s kitchen is located outside and surrounding it are benches for clientele to dine and watch the chefs do their magic.
The main ‘swords’ are prepared in advance and stored in a display fridge alongside the vegetables that accompany them (see pic above). The dressing and sauces for salads and swords are prepped ahead of time and every side and tapas item is prepped and cooked to order.
Making the drive up to Hahndorf is not a reoccurring thing for my family so whenever we do, we make sure to leave satisfied.
My parents started off the night with a beer for my dad and a moscato for my mum, accompanied by a house lemonade for myself.
Food wise, our tapas consisted of chicken wings. For mains, we ordered the pork belly sword, and the chicken mignon sword. The menu pairs a recommended side for each of the swords which were the Thai green apple salad and a bowl of chips.
The Thai green apple salad had a sour dressing on the side that tasted so good we ordered an extra one for our fries. The portion sizes can be deceiving but not even half of one of those swords were very filling.
As a family who visited the popular Hahndorf Inn every time we made the drive up to Hahndorf, The King’s Table calls our name louder now. We will be paying the restaurant several more visits.
